The Good Side of the Internet

I’ve been online for over a decade. I remember back in 1993, hearing about something called “the World Wide Web” and wondering if I’d ever be able to experience it here in my little West Virginia community. I wanted so badly to access this wonderful new medium; I could barely even imagine what it was all about. I knew only that people could communicate in real time because of it. That was enough for me.

Since then, the internet has become as much a part of our lives as the TV. From the youngest toddlers to great grandparents, people all over the world are online and communicating with each other. That’s a good thing. Of course, you can’t help but know about the bad stuff, too. We can’t ignore the fact that bad people will use the internet for bad things. In that respect, cyber life is no different than real life. It’s just that sometimes we forget to notice the good things. So today, I want to show you one of the good things.

I’ve been visiting a search site, Ripple.org, that is dedicated to helping non-profit organizations with funding. The really cool thing is that every single person can join in and help and it won’t cost you a cent. All you have to do is conduct your searches with Ripple.org!

You can also click on one of the “causes” listed on the site and click on the ad for that cause to help generate money for it. The more people who know about Ripple.org and visit every day, the more money will be generated for these wonderful charities.

Those behind Ripple.org have set this up at their own expense. They have pledged to donate every single cent – that’s 100% – to the charities. And the groups that are being supported by Ripple.org range from the youth-run Oaktree Foundation to the Noble Peace Prize recipient Grameen Foundation.

If you’re interested in giving something back to the world, please consider stopping by Ripple.org to click on advertisements, conduct searches or download the searchbar for convenient searches right from your browser. Let’s support the “good” side of the internet.

Thanks for the heads up. I’ve had a look at ripple.org and it’s a cool site. Nice clean interface and for a good cause as well – who could ask for more?

Thanks for looking it over. And for helping out by using it.

I’ve been online for about the same length of time. The best thing about this post is that you’re pointing out a good place to visit/endorse. Most of the time when you hear news about the internet it’s bad news.

You are so right. I know there’s good stuff online because I see it all the time. We just need to let everyone know about it because the good stuff never gets the publicity.

That is a great site. We could use more like them out there. Unfortunately, I think the ‘bad side of the internet’ is going to be harder and harder to manage.

I think there are more of us good folks than bad ones. We just need to do stuff like this. The internet is neither good nor bad. It’s how it’s used that can be good or bad. It’s up to us to use it for good more than “they” can use it for bad. :)

Hmm
How many hours did you spend on internet?
From 93?
That’s must be a huge amount of hours.
Do you think, that you spend time really well?

Yes, in fact, I believe I’ve spent my time online very well. I used the internet to teach me enough about computers to get a job in tech support for 7 years. Knowledge is never wasted, you know. but thanks for asking.

Seems like we started both a long time ago, i can remember waiting 2 minutes just to see a picture with my 9.600 modem. Funny how time flies!

I just want to ask for a link exchange -just leave a message on my blog – i use “nonofollow” too.

It’s been an interesting ride, hasn’t it? I could paint my nails waiting for a website to load a decade ago. :)

I’m not sure what you mean by a link exchange. I link to sites when I review them but I don’t do that per request unless someone is wanting to hire me to review them.

But you’ll get a do-follow here after you’ve posted a few times. (Had to tweak the settings due to massive amounts of comment spam. Yuck!)

Thanks, I always enjoy sites that are upfront about where the money goes (even more when they give it to charity). I wonder if Ripple Search violates Google’s terms–of-services?

I don’t believe it does but can always use the contact form on the website to ask them about it. Thanks for checking it out!
