Hidden Passageways

I don’t know why this is, but I’m guessing it has something to do with being a scorpio. We November people are secretive, you know. And yet, I’m going to reveal a secret about myself.

My dream house involves hidden rooms, tunnels and passageways.

I have always been fascinated by the idea of building a house with hidden spaces. Doors that look like part of the wall or steps that lift up to reveal a hidden entryway. OH! I get breathless just thinking about it!

I’m not really into the old farmhouse decor or the coldness of an English castle; I’m more inclinded to choose contemporary bedroom furniture and open spaces with huge windows. Nevertheless, I want that specific decor to hide the mystery that only I know.

If hidden spaces fascinate you, too, then you must check out Hidden Passageways. This has to be my favorite fantasy site. Yeah, my fantasy involves architecture. I’m boring like that. But anyway.

To skip straight to the still photos, check out the projects at the gallery. Even better, be sure to click on the media link and then both animations and video to see some of the really cool hidden doorways and stairs that Hidden Passageways can build. The site is all Flash and I couldn’t find a way to look at it in regular HTML, but the site is worth suffering through the unneccesary Flash. (Can you tell I don’t like Flash?)

How much do I want these features built into my home? Well, I’d probably give up the internet for the rest of my life if I could just have about a dozen of these Hidden Passageways. Put them in a house on a bluff on the north shore of Kauai and I’ll know I’ve died and gone to Heaven.

Hidden passageways eh? Maybe that is why I like Harry Potter so much. I definitely prefer the old-English Gothic look. But I do like the “openness” of modern layouts.

I’ve inspected several homes over the years that have hidden passageways. Most recently, a modern ocean-front home on the North Shore. I realized there was some “missing space” and began investigating (termites can find missing space more easily than we mere humans, so I really needed to find it.) I finally found an almost-invisble seam the the wall panel in a hallway. When I pushed on it, it popped open to reveal a staircase. The missing space at first-floor level was only about four feet by four feet, so I had been expecting ductwork or utilities. The stairs led to a hidden loft, beautifully finished and chock-full of toys. The homeowner had built it for his grandchildren. He was surprised that I had found it. :D

that’s actually really cool. If I had a house and a lot of money I’d build in some secret exits and stuff, too!
