The Ultimate WP Plugin

I can write a static HTML page or CSS. I can even manipulate some javascript and php a little bit. But a Firefox extension or WordPress plugin? Uh, no. Not me.

So, when I went looking for a specific WP plugin and came up empty, I turned my friend Owen. That was several weeks ago but today, Owen delivered. And he did it perfectly!

When someone would comment to one of my blog posts, I’d typically answer them on my blog. I like the feeling of a conversation on my blog. It was a pain, though, to copy my response from my blog and then paste it into and email to send it off to the commenter. And yet, if I don’t email my response to the comment, how do I know the commenter will see my response. Quite a dilemma, wouldn’t you say?

And that’s where Owen stepped in. Owen has created The Comment Email Responder v2 Plugin for WordPress. He based it on the work of Andrew Flusche.

The Comment Email Responder makes it easy to respond to comments on your blog. Not only will my response show up in the comments but the person to whom I respond will receive an email with my response as well. That’s one less step for any WP blogger trying to keep in touch with both new and regular visitors.

I’ve spent about 3 months or so searching for a plugin like this. I know one doesn’t exist. Or at least it didn’t before Owen came up with this one. So get on over to Owen’s site, download the plugin and tell him THANK YOU for this. Oh, and if you love this plugin as much as I do, please spread the word. Send Owen some linky love. He deserves it.

Do Follow!

That’s right, I Do Follow! What’s that, you ask? Well, DoFollow is plugin that removes the nofollow tag from your comments. That means that if you DoFollow, then links in your comments are spidered by search engines. Cool, huh? Colleen from GeekySpeaky started the D-List so that we’ll all know who we are and can comment on each other’s blogs to get more traffic. My buddy, Jimi, added me to the list so now I’m going to add a few people, too.

If you see a blog that belongs to the D-List, comment! And be sure to get the DoFollow plugin and join the party!

***Begin to copy here***

1. Write a short paragraph at the beginning of your post and link back to the blog that put you on the list in the paragraph. This isn’t a suggestion. You need to break up the duplicate content. Someone took the time to add you so the least you can do is give them an extra link back.

2. Copy the list of originals below COMPLETELY and add it to your blog. If you would like a different keyword for your blog then change it when you do your post and it should pass to most blogs with that keyword.

3. Take the adds from the blog that added you and place them in the “Originals” list.

4. Add at least 1 new blog that you KNOW us using the DO FOLLOW plugin to the list in the “My Adds” section. (Add no more than 5!) Let the people you’ve added know, so that they can keep the list going!

My Adds:

What Happened To My Design?

No, my page is not broken. It looks like this on purpose. I’m part of the 2nd annual CSS Naked Day, promoting Web Standards through the proper use of xhtml and css.

All of my usually witty, insightful content is here and still readable so please don’t go away. Just enjoy the pure simplicity of my site in all its nakedness.

My normally lovely, eye-appealing Scribble On The Wall will return on April 6, fully clothed.

And a special welcome to those who are stopping by here from the CSS Naked Day Host Website.

Brad Templeton on Copyright

I discovered Brad Templeton’s website several years ago. I was researching copyright and found his 10 Big Myths About Copyright Explained to be the easiest to understand yet most useful explanation of copyright as it applies to the internet. His Brief Intro To Copyright goes a step further to give you just about everything you need to know regarding this often misunderstood topic.

But that isn’t all there is to Brad. He’s a pioneer in the online world, having founded ClariNet as well as being involved with a myriad of other online companies such as Topica, and BitTorrent. He is Chairman of the Board of the EFF, too, and if you’re not a member there, you should join. And donate if you can.

I won’t enumerate all of Brad Templeton’s online involvements; the guy is active all over the cyber world. Just head on over to his Blog and read through his Ideas. He’s a fascinating man and reading what’s on his mind will expand your mind. From the everyday stuff, like passwords to the more sublime, like his future stuff category.

How much do I enjoy this blog? It just took me over an hour to write this little review because I kept getting lost in the blog. Oh, and I couldn’t pull myself away from his Burning Man phone booth pictures, either. Seriously, just go read. And enjoy.

Are You Utterly Geek?

I am! That’s why I wait patiently for Julie to update her Utterly Geek blog each day. But this isn’t just a geek blog with a lot of geek talk. It’s one of the best places I’ve found to discover all the stuff I really need/want. (Isn’t need and want the same when it comes to tech stuff?)

For example, I have kids. My kids want to decorate their rooms but I insist on having some say in it. (Don’t ever let them talk you into black carpeting!) Oh, but the walls are a different story. Julie introduced me to the neatest home decorating product for kids I’ve ever seen. How cool is that stuff?

I have no idea how Julie finds this stuff but I really have to have the coolest little desk light I’ve ever seen. And I have to have a powersquid for each of our computers. I didn’t even know there was such an animal until I read Utterly Geek! Seriously, if you want to know about all the coolest, most unique tech toys and gizmos, make this blog a daily read!

Blogging The Web2.0 News

I’m always looking for worthwhile blogs to add to my feed reader. I like a variety of blogs since I have so many different interests.

I know there are many tech blogs out there and sometimes it’s hard to pick just the couple best ones. I have my core blogs I read but when I find an interesting one like the Tap Blog I have to make a special note of it.

Be sure to check this one out. Interesting stuff, a nice clean look and an easy writing style. Sometimes just doing it right is enough.

Got Spam?

We all get spam. No, we don’t want it but we do get it. We filter it, stop it at the server, blast it away. And still it gets through. So we zap it.

Every once in a while though, a spam will catch our eye. Sometimes it’s because it’s really well disguised but other times it’s simply because it’s so damn funny. Sometimes, it just makes us shake our head in amused amazement.

And that’s where CrazySpam comes in. This is the place to submit your spam, whether it’s odd, funny, or just plain unbelievable. Or just stop by and read about other people’s spam.

Sometimes you have to laugh at those things that annoy you. It helps to make life a bit more bearable.

What’s My Line?

Like any good scorpio, I’m always up for a mystery. I love solving for the unknown. I’ve found an entire blog with nothing but pictures of mysterious objects. I have no idea how this guy can find so many items that are so strange looking but he does seem to keep the blog updated.

I’ve seen quite a few photo blogs but this one is by far the most entertaining. I got lost here for a few hours. That’s a good blog.

Contribution To The Blogosphere

I love blogging. Apparently, many others love blogging, too. That’s great. It gives me more to read online. I’ve found some really interesting and entertaining blogs on a variety of topics. They do all have one thing in common: better than average spelling and grammar.

Unfortunately, a number of bloggers either don’t take the time or simply never learned how to spell or how to construct a proper sentence. I’m not talking about the occassional typo or momentary brain freeze; I’m pointing to those who need some serious help.

To that end, I have found two excellent resources.

First, Big Dog’s Grammar is exactly what it claims to be: A bare bones guide to English. Starting with Subjects and Verbs and working through the list to modifiers and pronouns, Big Dog steps yo through with an easy to understand text. Explanations and examples drive the lessons home. I actually go to this guide often, simply to verify my writing.

Next, an excellent source for parents, teachers and students as well as bloggers is Grammar Bytes. Not only are there Tips and Rules for quick look-ups, but Grammar Bytes also offers interactive exercises to test your knowledge as well as printable handouts in pdf format. Oh, did I mention that this is all free?

Whether you’re a blogger or just love the English language, these are two great sites. Absolutely worth a bookmark.
